In the past, most dental restorations on posterior teeth were done with metal filling made of amalgam (silver alloy mixed with mercury) and gold or non precious metal. Today we have amazing materials that are metal-free, durable and match the natural color of the teeth. White composite fillings bond better to the enamel of the teeth and minimal reshaping is needed to preserve more of the natural tooth structure.
Metal-free crowns are cosmetically very natural looking. Zirconia based crowns are milled from a block of extremely hard zirconia using cad-cam computerized technology, then layered with natural looking porcelain.
